Thrombocytopenia associated with oral infection: A case report
Kholoud AlamriAbstract
Thrombocytopenia is a blood disorder that is characterized by a reduced number of circulating blood platelets. The risk of spontaneous bleeding, petechiae, and bruising is usually associated with platelet counts of less than 10 x 109/L. The etiology of thrombocytopenia is variable; bacterial and viral infections are among the most common causes. The first step in the management of thrombocytopenia is to identify the cause. Oral manifestations of thrombocytopenia may be the first clinical signs detected by the dentist and warrant further investigations. Here we report a case of transient thrombocytopenia caused by an oral infection that resolved completely after treating the underlying cause.
